The Israeli president Shimon Peres will arrive in Paris on Monday
The Israeli president Shimon Peres will arrive in Paris on Monday for a state visit by five days, the first state visit to France made by a president abroad since the election of Nicolas Sarkozy, announced Friday the Elysée.
The Head of State will receive his Israeli counterpart Monday at 17.00 for an interview, which will be followed that evening by a "state dinner," said David Martinon, spokesman for the Elysee, during his point weekly press.
"This visit is the first state visit by a foreign head of state in France since the election of President Sarkozy," said Mr. Martinon.
According to him, "the president has given this honour to be accorded to the President of the State of Israel in order to reaffirm the strength of the friendship between our two countries and our two peoples".
"It will also be a personal pleasure for the president to welcome Mr. Peres he knows well, having met on several occasions, and for which he has great respect and admiration," at he added.
"The president will testify once again Shimon Peres of his admiration for the man of peace and reconciliation that has not ceased to be and for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 with Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat, "according to the Elysée Palace.
It "redira Peres to the president that, in this context, it is more necessary than ever to continue negotiations because, beyond bilateral relations, the question of stability of the Middle East will obviously be at the centre of discussions", also claimed Mr. Martinon.
For the Elysée Palace, "the solution to this conflict can only be political."
"The feeling (of Mr Sarkozy) is that the best response to the terrorist attack (in Jerusalem on Thursday) is to revive the peace negotiations in order to achieve as quickly as possible the creation of a viable Palestinian state, condition for a lasting peace in the region, "also stated the spokesman.
Eight Israeli teenagers, students from a yeshiva-west of Jerusalem, were shot dead Thursday night by a Palestinian from East Jerusalem who fired on them with an automatic rifle. The attack also wounded ten.
MM. Peres and Sarkozy must usher in a whole on March 13 the Salon du Livre de Paris whose guest of honour this year is Israel.
