Manifestation of Jews ultraorthodoxes on Thursday night in Jerusalem.

The council of the UN Security did not reach a common text vote to condemn the suicide attack, greeted with joy in Gaza. The big concern is for the peace process.

The attack Thursday evening in Jerusalem has attracted a large and strong condemnation in the international community, with the exception of anti-Israeli organizations, Hamas in the lead. A spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry believed that the bomber had wanted "to kill the chances for peace." The Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, also condemned the attack as President George W. Bush, but also London, Madrid and Paris. Nicolas Sarkozy Friday condemned "in the strongest terms" attacks "cowardly and barbaric". The day before, the french minister of Foreign Affairs Bernard Kouchner, had said that France, "despite the violence, which are also an attack against peace" calls for "the continuation of the negotiation". The announcement of George W. Bush, however, did not say anything about the peace talks. He however indicated his talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert: "I told him that the United States stood firmly beside Israel in the face of this terrible attack". Note that the Democratic candidates at the investiture in the upcoming American elections, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, also condemned the attack.

Tensions at the United Nations

The only false note came from the United Nations, where, despite the condemnation of Secretary General of the organization Ban Ki-moon, the Security Council, meeting in emergency, was unable to agree on a text condemning attack . And because of opposition from Libya, according to statements by the American ambassador to the United Nations Zalmay Khalilzad. "The delegation, with the support of two others, did not want to condemn the attack itself, it has tried to link other issues," he said, explaining that such a link was his eyes unacceptable.

The explanation Libyan reluctance is linked to the refusal of the Security Council last Saturday, to adopt a text drafted by Libya and wishing hard in terms condemn the attack by Israel in the Gaza Strip. The Council had nevertheless condemned such violence but in different terms.

The ambassador said Russia have proposed, in his capacity as chairman of the board, "a formula that would have expressed the deep concern of the Council to the loss of civilian lives caused by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and condemned at the same time this terrorist attack" . But that was not enough.

The representatives of Israel and Libya then exchanged words very hard. The Israeli ambassador, Dan Gillerman, referring to the Security Council infiltration by "terrorists". "We do not need a certificate of good conduct from the terrorist regime of Israel," replied a representative of Libya. The latter claimed to have insisted on "a balanced text condemning the killings in Gaza at the same time as the killings in Jerusalem."

In Gaza, the attack was greeted with cènes joy. Abu Zouhri, a spokesman of Hamas, held the "heroic" attack. This attack constitutes "normal response to the crimes" and "killing of civilians committed by Israel", he said.
